Chapter 1.1 (PHE 5)

Medium sprint start

What I should learn: Body alignment in medium sprint start.

Activity 1. Discovery Time

  1. Look at figure 1.1.
  2. In groups, discuss what you can see from figure 1.1.
  3. Which races are started using the above posture?
  4. Where do events using the above posture take place?
  5. Take turns in imitating the boy in figure 1.1.

Activity 2. Digital Time

Watch the video clips on medium sprint start.

As you watch the video, observe the following:

  1. Body, arm and leg position.
  2. Eye focus.

Medium sprint start is a method of starting sprint races where the legs are close together with the knee of the back leg placed about opposite of the front leg.

Points to note

  • On the command, ‘‘on your mark”, go to the starting line and take crouch start.
  • Place the legs such that the knee of the back leg is opposite the front leg.
  • The feet should be close together.
  • Place the arms straight, shoulder width apart with fingers spread behind the starting line and thumb turned away.
  • Keep the head in line with the body, eyes focused ahead.
  • On the ‘set’ command, go in ready position with the whole body and raise the hips just above the shoulders.
  • On the command, “Go”, press hard against the ground for forward push.

Safety tips

  1. Perform warm-up activities before participation.
  2. Each learner to use their lane and stick to it.
  3. Use proper sport attire during the activity.
  4. Follow the commands given during practise.
  • Rotating or twisting the torso
  • Eyes are focused ahead
  • Crouch position
  • Leaning excessively forward or backwards

Practice Time

Activity 3. Group Task

  • In groups, in a semi-circle take turns demonstrating the body alignment in medium sprint start as observed in figure 1.1.
  • Give feedback to each other.

Activity 4. Group Task

  • In groups of five, take numbers from 1-5.
  • The learner “number 5” marks a starting point on the ground.
  • Number 1 to 4 take lanes and stand behind the starting point.
  • Number 5 gives sprint start commands as number 1 to 4 assume the medium sprint start position.
  • Number 1 to 4 run for a short distance and back to the starting point.
  • Learner 5 changes roles with learner 4 who gives the starting commands while 1, 2, 3 and 5 repeat the drill.
  • Give feedback to each other.

Activity 5. Paired Task

  1. In pairs, run for a distance of fifty metres using the medium sprint start.
  2. Share your experiences using the following checklist:
    • Standing behind a line marked on the ground.
    • Assuming the crouch position.
    • Placing legs with the knee of the back leg opposite the front leg.
    • Arms straight, shoulder-width apart, fingers spread behind the line and thumb turned away.
    • Focusing ahead.

Activity 6. Games Time

Play racing games for enjoyment.

  1. Medium start shuttle relay race: In groups, run for a distance of twenty-five metres and back using the medium sprint start.
  2. Bean bag race:
    • In groups of four, two participants stand at the starting point and two are at the opposite end.
    • Run a distance of twenty-five metres using the medium sprint start.
    • At the start, pick a bean bag from the ground and carry it.
    • Drop it to your teammate who runs back. The third and fourth runner do the same.
  3. Reaction drill: In pairs, leap up and run from a variety of positions such as kneeling on the line, lying on the ground using the medium sprint start.

State three safety measures that should be observed during the medium start in sprint.

Home task

Form an athletics club with your peers and run races using the medium sprint start.
